Powercor is upgrading Ballarat’s energy network by building a third substation in Ballarat East. The new substation will ensure all of Ballarat's homes and businesses can access reliable and safe power as the region’s population grows, and will support the effective ongoing operation of bushfire safety devices installed in the region.
The Ballarat East substation will include an architecturally-designed exterior. It will also feature technology that reduces the risk of powerline-related bushfires by instantly cutting power if a line is contacted. The modern substation will feature a multi-million-dollar package of measures to house the electrical infrastructure to help address community concerns.
We are committed to leaving a positive legacy in the community and as part of the project will be establishing a $200,000 Community Benefit Fund. This fund will support the development of community enhancement projects in the areas surrounding the substation, such as paths, parks, recreation or security.
We are committed to working with the local community to design the new Ballarat Zone Substation and the nearby surrounds and invite you to play a pivotal role through our community co-design initiative.
How you can help shape the project
Stage 1 community consultation on the substation's visual design and the Community Legacy Fund is now closed.
We are now working to collate the information received to help influence our next phase of visual design, which will then be presented later in the year for further consultation prior to the visual design being finalised.
At this time we will also provide an update on the shortlist of Community Benefit Fund ideas for the community to choose from.
Other ways to shape the project
If you would like to request a conversation with us personally you can call 13 22 06 during business hours or email majorprojects@powercor.com.au.
