Flexible Hot Water Trial

We're improving how customers share, access, and store renewable energy by trialling a new daytime off peak period.

More than half of Australian households own an electric water heating system which makes up approximately 25GWh of flexible demand in the electricity network every day.

This innovative trial will automatically shift controlled hot water loads to the middle of the day when solar energy is abundant, allowing customers to soak up renewable energy using their hot water system while getting the most value from our controlled load tariff.

This is part of our commitment to provide a safe, reliable, and affordable supply of electricity while helping our customers move closer to a renewable energy future.

How does it work?

Flexible Hot Water is one of several services we're exploring to help bring our customers closer to net zero.

The trial leverages our existing smart meter technologies and controlled load tariff to understand the effects on our customers and develop new incentives for customers who shift their demand to meet peak periods of renewable energy generation.

More than 140,000 residential and commercial customers currently connect their hot water systems to our distribution network through a controlled load circuit. Over the next two years we will gradually shift this fleet to the new daytime off peak period.

How to get involved

If you've been notified directly by us about your involvement in the trial, we want to hear about your experience. To register your involvement in the customer experience surveys, all you need to do is complete the form below and provide your:

  • Full name

You'll then be asked to complete three short surveys at the beginning, middle and end of the trial. Once you've completed all three surveys, we'll send you a $100 e-gift voucher to your email address.

Share your questions and feedback

We also want to hear from all our customers about their views on how an extended daytime off peak window can bring savings to households.

Some of the other inputs into the design of Flexible Hot Water include:

  • How it compares to third-party solutions
  • Impacts on hot water availability and retailer billing
  • Ideas on the right incentives to offer cheaper rates to customers including zero cost or negative import network charges during the day
  • Other value drivers for customers who take advantage of flexible demand including environmental and network power quality improvements

You can submit your question directly to us below. Alternatively, you can send us an email at hotwatertrial@powercor.com.au
